  24.         *** JUST WHAT IS WINCHECK ***
  25.  
  26.  WinCheck is designed to manage any number of checking, savings, and credit
  27.  card accounts.  Since WinCheck's initial release last year, it has
  28.  developed into a top-notch financial manager.  WinCheck's features include
  29.  a Check Form Designer, to build check templates for printing on virtually
  30.  any pre-printed check form (dot matrix and laser checks are both supported).
  31.  
  32.  The Custom Report Maker allows you to view and print a variety of supplied
  33.  reports, such as cash flow reports, or create custom reports tailored to your
  34.  own needs.  With the Custom Report Maker, you can print an entertainment
  35.  expense report, a credit/deposit history, or all tax deductible transactions
  36.  for the year to date.
  37.  
  38.  WinCheck's transaction classifications, or "categories," allow you to keep
  39.  track of the money earned and spent on categories such as Business and 
  40.  Entertainment.  WinCheck's budgeting facilities can be used in combination
  41.  with these categories to plan a monthly budget.  Add reoccurring transactions
  42.  to a menu or have WinCheck remind you to make transactions such as mortgage
  43.  payments and paycheck deposits. WinCheck also supports Windows Dynamic Data
  44.  Exchange (DDE) and sports an internal batch language. 
  45.  
  46.  WinCheck offers an exceptionally attractive and intuitive user interface
  47.  featuring a Control Bar, Status Bar, iconic "Toolbox," and check registers
  48.  with adjustable column widths.  Checks and other transactions appear as 3-D
  49.  dialog boxes with bitmapped backgrounds.  Screen colors and fonts are fully
  50.  customizable.  Standard operations, such as writing checks and making deposits,
  51.  may be performed by clicking on icons from the Control Bar.

  53.  The online help facility and intuitive user interface pretty much precludes
  54.  the need for a manual, although the 200 page, heavily illustrated manual 
  55.  does further detail many of WinCheck's features with various examples.

  81.  This new 3.0 version has a variety of new features.  They are:
  82.  
  83.    a) Quicken import capability
  84.    b) Custom report generation
  85.    c) Color and font customization
  86.    d) Improved help files
  87.    e) Ability to print Landscape checks (with newer printer drivers)
  88.    f) Ability to handle multiple accounts
  89.    g) No limit on number of monthly transactions

  91.  Special new featues include:
  92.  
  93.   a) New "Print Direct" feature for printing one check at a time to
  94.      Dot-Matrix style printers (no page eject).
  95.  
  96.   b) Categories can now be classified as Income, Expense, or Both. 
  97.      All of your categories from your current version will default to
  98.      "Both".  You can modify these categories to specify income or 
  99.      expense with the "Edit Categories" dialog.  By indicating Income
  100.      or Expense, your budget reports will be more informational.
  101.  
  102.   c) Categories can be classified as Tax deductible.  When you enter a
  103.      new transaction, the "Tax Deductible" box will automatically check
  104.      when you select one of these categories.  You can, however, still
  105.      un-check the box if you desire.
  106.  
  107.   d) Expandability!  WinCheck now allows you to add custom tools to your
  108.      menu.  These tools use DDE to communicate with WinCheck.  Two NEW
  109.      tools have been included, PAYROLL.EXE and BALANCE.EXE.  Try them!
  110.      They are on the TOOLS menu.
  111.  
  112.      All of the information you need for using WinCheck's DDE can be
  113.      found in the DDE.TXT file.
  114.  
  115.      The source code to PAYROLL and the source code to a more simple
  116.      add-on tool (Visual Basic) have been included on the distribution
  117.      disk in the DDE_VB.ZIP file.  Sample code for hardcore SDK tools
  118.      may be found in the DDE_SDK.ZIP file.
  119.  
  120.  e)  The categories for the Budget, Cash Flow, Profit/Loss, and category
  121.      reports are now in alphabetical order (instead of order of entry).

  123.  f)  New pre-defined categories on startup of account or by running a
  124.      WinCheck command file.

  128.        *** HOW TO INSTALL WINCHECK ***
  129.  
  130.  
  131.  Use our SETUP.EXE program, which will copy the files for you and install 
  132.  a WINCHECK group in the program manager with a TUT (Tutorial) account.
  133.  To use our SETUP.EXE program...
  134.  
  135.    1) Close down all extraneous Windows applications.
  136.  
  137.    2) Then do ONE of the following:
  138.  
  139.        A) From File Manager,  locate then double click the SETUP.EXE
  140.           file in the directory you copies the files to:
  141.  
  142.           OR
  143.  
  144.        B) From Program Manager, pull down the FILE menu, and select the
  145.           RUN option.  Enter the full path to the SETUP.EXE file, as in
  146.               "C:\XXX\SETUP.EXE"
  147.           and hit ENTER.
  148.  
  149.    3) When the setup program asks for a directory, specify initial directory,
  150.       or accept the given default (C:\WINCHECK). 
  151.  
  152.    4) When the next dialog box shows up, you can select what you want to
  153.       install.  If there is any doubt, select everything by hitting the
  154.       "Add All" button.
  155.  
  156.    5) Then push the INSTALL button to install WinCheck.
  157.  
  158.    6) When the setup process is complete, you may delete the temporary
  159.       directory you created in the first step.

  162.               *** INTERNATIONAL CURRENCY SUPPORT ***
  163.  
  164.     This version of WinCheck support non-US currencies much better
  165.     than previous versions.  WinCheck will support only 1 type of
  166.     currency.  To let WinCheck know what kind of currency you use,
  167.     do the following:
  168.  
  169.           1) Start Control Panel.  Get to the "International" section.
  170.              Find the "Currency" area.  Make sure all the information
  171.              there is correcy.
  172.  
  173.           2) Edit your WIN.INI file.  Find the   [intl]   section.
  174.              Add the following lines into the [intl] section.
  175.              (assuming your currency names are Pounds and pence -
  176.               make changes accordingly)
  177.  
  178.              [intl]
  179.              sMajorCurrName=Pounds
  180.              sMinorCurrName=pence
  181.  
  182.     That should do it.  There may still be a few dollar signs here and
  183.     there, but we are working on it.

  188.           *** PRINTING PROBLEMS? ***
  189.  
  190.     Refer to the On-Line Help topic "Printing Checks" for help with 
  191.     printing checks to a Dot Matrix Printer.
  192.     
  193.     Most printer drivers have special features that take added
  194.     advantage of the Windows 3.0 environment.  WinCheck assumes
  195.     that you have one of these drivers installed.  Some older
  196.     printer drivers, and current versions of some font packages
  197.     (Bitstream Facelift) do not support these features. 
  198.  
  199.     If WinCheck does not print properly on your system, add the
  200.     following line to the [WiChk14a] section of your WIN.INI file:
  201.  
  202.     NODEVMODE=1
  203.  
  204.     This line will cause WinCheck to bypass the special printer
  205.     driver features that cause the problems.  Note:  You will not
  206.     be able to print landscape checks if you use the NODEVMODE=1
  207.     option.
